Surface Water Acidification in the Vosges Mountains: Relation to Bedrock and Vegetation Cover

  • Conference paper
Forest Decline and Atmospheric Deposition Effects in the French Mountains

Abstract

Over the last twenty years, many northern hemisphere countries have developed hydrochemical investigations in catchments, particularly with regard to surface water acidification and acid atmospheric pollution. In Europe, the Scandinavian countries were first aware of this environmental problem. In these areas, diluted oligotrophic surface waters on granitic sensitive bedrock are affected. The first investigations concluded that many fishless lakes and streams resulted from surface water acidification (Henriksen 1979; Wright and Johannessen 1980).
