Abstract
The paper calls attention to the importance of coal in energy security and in balance of trade opportunities. It contains information relative to the current state of research and development of clean coal technologies by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and it outlines the objectives of these programs. It also discusses the ongoing efforts of the DOE directed toward promoting international bilateral collaboration in the research, demonstration, development, and utilization of clean coal technology.
