The SCID (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency) Mouse — Its Biology and Use in Immunotoxicological Research

Abstract

In medical research, there is a need to bridge the gap between in vivo animal experimentation and studies on human cells and tissues in vitro. Two clefts have to be bridged — one is the species difference, the other is the in vivo — in vitro difference. The SCID mouse reconstituted with human cells may represent an important tool for building the bridges needed. Models based on reconstituted SCID mice make experimentation with human cells in an in vivo situation possible without the ethical and practical constraints that limit studies in man.
