Zusammenfassung
In einzelnen Ländern und Erdteilen treten die bösartigen Tumoren des Kopf-Hals-Bereiches in sehr unterschiedlicher Häufigkeit auf. In Europa und den USA machen sie beim Mann etwa 5%, bei der Frau 1–2% aller malignen Tumoren aus, in Südindien sind sie die häufigsten Tumoren. In der geographischen Verteilung spiegelt sich offenbar der Einfluß bestimmter Karzinogene wider. Die bei uns sehr seltenen Karzinome des Nasopharynx machen in Hongkong 13% aller malignen Tumoren aus, in der chinesischen Provinz Kanton ist ihr Vorkommen mit 150 Neuerkrankungen pro Jahr auf 100 000 Menschen um rund 15omal höher als in Deutschland. Eine Reihe von Ursachen werden diskutiert wie die Inhalation von Rauch bei der Verbrennung bestimmter Holzsorten, die Nitrosamine enthalten, und die endemische Infektion mit dem Epstein-Barr-Virus. In Südindien ist das Plattenepithelkarzinom der Wangenschleimhaut und der Gingiva der häufigste Tumor und soll die Hälfte aller Krebserkrankungen bei Männern ausmachen. Das ständige Kauen von Betel und Tabak zusammen mit gebranntem Kalk wird als Ursache angesehen.
