Abstract

The historical roots of schizophrenia are to be found in Kalhbaum’s (1863) identification of three psychotic conditions of young and middle adult life: catatonia, hebephrenia and dementia paranoides. Catatonia is a disorder of the initiation of voluntary activity; hebephrenia is characterized by inappropriate speech, mood and behaviour, while the essence of dementia paranoides is a defect in evaluating reality. Kraepelin amalgamated these three disorders to form a single disease because of their overlapping clinical features and shared propensity to run a chronic course.
