Abstract

Benign germ cell tumors of the mediastinum are commonly referred to as teratomas. Teratomas are defined as tumors or neoplasms that are composed of tissue that is foreign to the organ or anatomic site in which they arise [1]. The additional requirement that all three germ layers, ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm, be present is often included in a definition of a teratoma. However, this is not an absolute requirement since with incomplete differentiation, one or two of the layers may be missing.
