Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Head and Neck

  • Chapter
Prognostic Factors in Cancer

Abstract

A wide variety of tumor types arising from different tissues are included under the heading of “head and neck cancer.” This review is concerned with squamous cell carcinomas arising from the surface epithelium of the upper respiratory and alimentary tract, which includes the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, and paranasal sinuses. In excess of 95% of head and neck cancers are squamous cell carcinomas; their behavior differs according to the topographic site of origin but they have many prognostic factors in common. Undifferentiated carcinoma of nasopharyngeal type (UCNT), although arising from respiratory epithelium, has a different behavior from squamous cell carcinoma and will not be considered here.
