More than 90%–95% of malignant tumours of the pancreas are exocrine carcinomas. Surgical resection remains the only potentially curative approach, although the resectability is still low and the prognosis is still poor compared with cancer in other digestive organs. The median survival time for all diagnosed patients with exocrine pancreatic carcinoma is reported to be between 4 and 7 months [18,42, 66]; the overall 5-year survival rate is extremely low: in the older literature figures are under 1% [22]; recently, figures of l%–3% [18, 48] have been reported.
