Abstract

Since 1980, more than 100 patients have been treated for cavernous and capillary hemangiomas using fibrin sealant and magnesium thread. Excellent results can be achieved by forming a thrombosis following injection of sealant into the hemangioma.

With infants and small children, fibrin sealant and magnesium thread implant is injected directly into the vessel convolution after a computed tomography image has been made. Thrombosis of the hemangioma is followed by fibrosis, until the hemangioma gradually wastes away. Thus an operation can be avoided. The treatment can be performed several times.

In adults, fibrin sealant and a magnesium thread implant are performed once and, after thrombosis, complete extirpation of the whole hemangioma can easily be carried out.

Histological investigations showed fibrosis and sclerosis of granulated tissue enriched with fibroblasts. No sign of inflammation could be observed.

Patients are treated in our office facilities. There is no risk of emboli and can easily be managed by the medical staff.
