Abstract
Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) is a means of providing prolonged extracorporeal cardiopulmonary bypass to patients with acute, reversible cardiac or respiratory failure unresponsive to conventional medical management. This intervention has traditionally been deemed extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), but the current mnemonic “ECLS” more appropriately expresses the fact that this modality encompasses functions other than oxygenation, including cardiac support, renal support, and carbon dioxide removal.
