Abstract
As we prepare to enter the twenty-first century, no aspect of cardiovascular surgery has more of a futuristic aura than mechanical cardiac assistance. What changes and challenges will the new century bring to this field? Before attempting to characterize the next few decades, I will briefly review the history of mechanical circulatory support systems. By coincidence, much of this history has spanned my own career as a heart surgeon.
