Abstract
New emphasis is given in these chapters to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, a routine clinical method in patients with respiratory failure. Gattinoni, a pioneer in this area, reports on his experience in adults, as do Pearson and Firmin in children. Zwischenberger focusses on the implantable IVOX pump, an approach which can very easily be realized in the clinical process.
