Liming strategies and effects: the Lake Västra Skälsjön case study

Abstract

Around the turn of the century, Lake Västra Skälsjön was mentioned in a Swedish fishing journal in conjunction with annual figures from a fish hatchery which was situated in a small adjacent water system (Gustavsson 1889, 1901). Arwidsson (1907) provided a more detailed account of releases of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) in the lake. The composition of benthic fauna, particularly non-biting midges (Chironomidae), was studied between 1943 and 1948 by Brundin (1949). In the 1960s, a large number of lakes in the region were surveyed and various reports on Lake Västra Skälsjön were presented by Ahl (1968), Grönberg et al (1967, 1968) and Mossberg and Nyberg (1972). The latter (1976) repeated Brundin’s sampling of benthic fauna from 1943. Water and zooplankton samples were taken in conjunction with a survey of char lakes south of River Dalälven in 1972 (Dickson et al 1975). Between 1976 and 1986, the lake was included in a fish sampling programme for limed lakes (Nyberg et al 1986) and since 1989 it has been included in the national ISEL (Integrated Studies of the Effects of Liming) programme (Appelberg and Aldén 1992). In conjunction with fish sampling, water (Nyberg unpubl.), phytoplankton (data: E. Hörnström) and zooplankton (Nyberg unpubl.) samples were also taken. Benthic fauna samples were taken on an irregular basis between 1977 and 1987 (Mossberg and Nyberg unpubl.). Otherwise, the short-term effects of liming in the lake have been reported by Eriksson et al (1982, 1983) along with the re-introduction of Arctic char in 1976-78 by Nyberg (1988). The effects of liming on the rooted vegetation in the lake have been described by Eriksson (1988).
