Abstract
Modeling and observational research requirements have led the World Climate Research Programme to initiate the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) with the goal of the production of a 10-year set of monthly analyses of area-averaged precipitation on a 2.5ΒΌ global grid using satellite estimates based on IR and microwave data, together with station observations. Its several principal centers each presently uses existing observations and techniques, including an IR-based tropical rainfall estimate and oceanic estimates derived from SSM/I observations as well as gauge observations, to produce rainfall analyses. A Calibration/Validation component ensures that the satellite estimates used in the project are of high quality by providing validation data sets and by encouraging the development of new observing technology. Examples of the satellite-based estimates are presented.
