Abstract
The rate of complications in the surgery of the large bowel is still rather high, with a numerical value of up to 30% (Khoury and Waxman 1983). Beyond other local and systemic factors, the increased collagenase activity in the intestinal wall is one of the main reasons why the ability of the anastomotic tissue to hold the suture material tight in the early postoperative period is reduced (Young and Wheeler 1983; Lünstedt and Debus 1990). In the past this fact has been the reason for many research projects to reduce this percentage (and will continue to be in the future).
