Abstract
Every eukaryotic cell contains its major genetic information in long DNA molecules constituting the chromosomes located in its nucleus. In higher plant cells, this nuclear DNA can easily be 1 m or more in total length and its concentration can reach 0.1 mg/ml or more (Grierson and Covey 1988). In order to fit into the nucleus and to function as genetic information specifying growth and development, this material has to be packaged in an organized way. DNA packaging and condensation also is a prerequisite for ordered distribution in cell divisions involving mitosis or meiosis.
