Summary
Chest trauma in multiply injured patients is not usually life threatening. The mortality rate in patients with isolated trauma of the chest wall is 4%–8%. Additional head injuries increase the figure to 32.7%, giving this type of injury the highest mortality rate in multiply injured patients. Prompt diagnosis on the basis of thorough clinical examination and prompt therapeutic intervention, usually in the form of tube thoracostomy, are crucial for the survival of multiply injured patients with chest trauma.
