Fibrin Sealant: The Cleveland Clinic Experience

Fibrin Sealing in Surgical and Nonsurgical Fields

Abstract

At The Cleveland Clinic we began to use Tisseel in 1986. Since 1987 we have used the drug in 340–450 cases per year, or 11%–15% of all cardiac operations annually. In 1991 Tisseel was used in 41% of cardiac reoperations, and cardiac reoperations comprised 86% of the indications for Tisseel use (diffuse low pressure bleeding). With a total experience of 2129 applications, we have found this to be an effective hemostatic agent and no drug related complications have been identified.
