Abstract

Thanks to the development and refinement of proper endoscopic surgical equipment, thoracoscopy is becoming increasingly operative, in addition to its use as a diagnostic tool. We present the indications and operative videothoracoscopic methods adopted in 11 cases of spontaneous pneumothorax with bullous emphysema. We stress the utility of computed tomography in the diagnosis, the value of the new reloadable mechanical staplers, and human fibrin glue for obtaining an apical biological pleurodesis. The technique presented obviates the need for thoracotomy and eliminates any unesthetic and postoperative pain sequelae.
