Standard Operation Procedures for Sampling and Sample Treatment of Soils for Environmental Specimen Banking
Environmental Specimen Banking (ESB) is a new instrument for long-term environmental monitoring, assessment and research. It depends on the systematic and long-term storage of selected environmental materials for deferred analysis and evaluation (Lewis and Klein, 1990). Banked specimens such as soils, sediments, plants, animals, and human tissues offer the chance to analyse retrospectively the concentrations and effects of potentially dangerous substances in the environment which are hitherto unknown, undetectable or thought to be innocuous.
