Summary
Soil processes are strongly influenced by soil properties and condition, land management, and weather. These factors can change greatly over short distances and times. For example, the susceptibility of a field to water erosion can change dramatically during the time it takes for ploughing (i.e. a few hours). Similarly, conditions on either side of a boundary line can be very different if farmers employ different management practices (e.g. no-till versus conventional tillage). This variability is in addition to the inherent variability of soil properties. Furthermore, variations in weather can occur over times from several minutes to years.
