Abstract
The first interactions of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) with hepatocytes begin with the infection process. In vivo, HBV shows a very narrow host range since it can productively infect only some primates (Zuckerman, 1975). Moreover, a marked liver tropism has been observed which is nearly limited to normal hepatocytes. Furthermore, from several reports it appears that attempts at efficiently infecting hepatoma cells met with limited success, presumably because of changes in plasma membrane properties of these cells, leading to postulate that a specific binding of viral particles to a membrane receptor might exist. This receptor is not yet known.
