Abstract

In the liver, most of the hepatocyte population resides in the G0 compartment of the cell cycle and exit into the G1 phase is achieved after an insult or injury stimulus is given (Michalopoulos, 1990). It has recently been suggested that the cellular populations which play the major role in the replacement of the functional liver mass after insult or chemical injury are mature hepatocytes, the oval cells with characteristics of both bile duct cells and fetal hepatocytes, and the Ito (fat storing) cells (Evarts et al., 1987, Evarts et al., 1990, Schirmacher et al, 1992).
