Zusammenfassung
Van Dyke’s Familie stammte aus Holland und Deutschland. Nach dem Studium der Medizin an der Universität von Chicago praktizierte er Medizin mit einem National Cancer Research Fellowship, das ihm ermöglichte, in verschiedenen europäischen Laboratorien zu arbeiten. So war er eine Zeitlang in Edinburgh und Brüssel sowie in Freiburg bei dem Physiologen P. Trendelenburg. Von 1926–1932 war er Professor der Pharmakologie an der Universität von Chicago. Mit Unterstützung der Rockefeller Foundation baute er von 1932–1938 das Peking Union Medical College in China auf. 1938 wurde er Head of the Division of Pharmacology des Institute for Medical Research der Squibb Pharmaceutical Company in New Brunswick. Von 1944–1963 war er an der Columbia Universität David Hosack Professor und Chairman des Department of Pharmacology.
