Recent Developments in the Chemistry of Sulfonylurea Herbicides

  • Chapter
Herbicides Inhibiting Branched-Chain Amino Acid Biosynthesis

Part of the book series: Chemistry of Plant Protection ((PLANT PROTECTIO,volume 10))

Abstract

Since their discovery by Levitt in the early 1970,s the sulfonylurea herbicides have been a major research program for many crop protection chemical companies. The importance of this class of herbicide, with their unprecedented levels of activity and the breadth of structural types, required the development of new synthetic methods in several chemical areas to enable the researcher to explore this class of herbicide. An in-depth review of the chemistry that has been developed for the synthesis of sulfonylureas is well beyond the scope of this manuscript. Rather, in this review we will attempt to summarize and highlight the recent developments in the chemistry of the sulfonylurea herbicides. We will cover newer and unusual synthetic methods that has been developed to prepare a variety of sulfonamides, sulfonylureas with modified bridges, and sulfonylureas containing the sulfonylurea bridge fused to the heterocyclic portion of the molecule.
