The Role of the Central Nervous System in the Malignant Transformation of Cells in Higher Organisms

  • Chapter
The Beginnings of Cancer in the Cell

Abstract

It has been known for a long time that people who are frequently depressed, or who have suffered a great loss which affects them strongly emotionally (for instance the loss of a spouse) more frequently develop cancerous tumors than the average population [1]. This is usually explained by the fact that in the case of people with certain unhealthy states of mind, the material structure of the brain is also influenced (mind-brain parallelism). Since parts of the brain control the synthesis of the steroid type cancer promoters like phorbol esters [2] (see also Chapter 3), changes in the brain influence the synthesis and concentrations of these compounds.
