Abstract
The success of most interventional procedures is largely determined through careful planning and preparation before they begin. High-quality diagnostic arteriography that clearly demonstrates the pathologic vascular anatomy is an integral part of this preparation (Fig. 1). Abdominal aortography prior to an interventional procedure requires an examination that is tailored to the clinical question at hand. Consequently, the request for angiography and intervention in patients with probable disease involving the abdominal aorta or its branches should be considered a request for consultation. The clinical situation, including any prior arteriograms, cross-sectional imaging studies, and noninvasive vascular assessment, must be carefully evaluated by the angiographer so that the diagnostic arteriogram can be planned in a manner that will obtain the maximum amount of information.
