Conventional catheterization laboratories with film-changer technology allow only diagnostic evaluations. Nowadays, however, for example, in the United States, more than 80% of laboratories perform interventional procedures routinely. The number of strictly diagnostic laboratories continues to decrease, and we expect that by 1995 all angiographic laboratories will be converted to allow diagnostic as well as interventional procedures. Special angiographic equipment is required to perform neurovascular interventions. The rapid development of vascular interventional procedures has been greatly facilitated by advances in modern imaging technology and such techniques as digital fluoroscopy, on-line digital substraction angiography (DSA), roadmapping, and viewing of digital reference images.
