Abstract
It is an established fact that the islets of Langerhans can contain at least four different basic cell types: insulin, glucagon, somatostatin, and pancreatic polypeptide (PP) cells. This applies not only to the classes of Mammalia and Aves, but is assumed to hold for all vertebrate species (Stefan and Falkmer 1978). Furthermore, the islets also contain numerous other hormones and hormone-like substances such as prostaglandins (Luyckx and Lefeèbvre 1978; Robertson 1979).
