Pharmacology of Smooth Muscle

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 111))

Abstract

The research into the smooth muscle of various organ systems which has been carried out for more than a century has largely been aimed at factors regulating the muscular tone. The nervous mechanisms have usually been the object of greater interest than the relevant properties of the smooth muscle cells themselves. This also holds true for research into the smooth muscles of the male reproductive tract, some of which have been used as a model of neurotransmission, e.g., the vas deferens for more than 30 years. Some of the trends characterizing the research in this field from the late 1970s onwards are the work done in order to isolate and identify the non-adrenergic non-cholinergic (NANC) inhibitory neurotransmitter from the bovine retractor penis muscle, and the increasing use of isolated human penile tissues for pharmacological experiments. Also the growing number of morphological studies, mainly performed with immunohistochemical techniques, have played an important role in the localization of several peptides and other compounds.
