Die Leberzellinsuffizienz ist im Rahmen des Multiorganversagens der Sepsis ein Problem von großer klinischer Relevanz. Charakteristische Merkmale sind die Suppression der Syntheseleistung und eine massive Inhibition des Entgiftungsstoffwechsels der Leber.
