Abstract
Since the beginning of the 1970’s it has become increasingly obvious that the world economy is undergoing a process of structural change that ultimately will have equally as fundamental effects as the industrial revolution had some 150 years ago. Economic observers have had notorious difficulties in anticipating and understanding this radical change of the economic structure. One important reason for this is that so much of the debate about socio-economic development deals with short-run problems such as inflation, unemployment and the balance of payments. In a short-run perspective these factors have great importance, of course, but in the long run they are not decisive for the development of society. If we want to understand the economic, social and cultural developments of regions and nations we must look to those factors that change more slowly and thus have a decisive role for development.
