Abstract
The simple olefin ethylene has been known to affect plant growth and development since the early part of this century when the various effects of illuminating gas on pea seedling development were first described (Neljubow, 1901). Since then, it has been shown to influence a diverse array of plant growth and developmental processes, including germination, senescence, epinasty, leaf abscission, stress responses, sex determination in monoecious species and fruit ripening (Abeles et al., 1992). The biosynthetic pathway for ethylene has been elucidated and genes encoding the two key enzymes, ACC synthase and ACC oxidase, have been cloned from a number of plant species (Theologis, 1992).
