Zusammenfassung
Die Strahlenbiologie ist eine interdisziplinäre Wissenschaft, die sich mit der Wirkung energiereicher Strahlung (zu der die Röntgenstrahlen gehören) auf das Lebewesen beschäftigt. Ihre Geschichte beginnt kurz nach der Entdeckung der Röntgenstrahlen, ist also praktisch 100 Jahre alt. Die biologische Strahlenwirkung führt, neben der Schaffung strahlenbiologischer Grundlagen für die Bedürfnisse der Medizin, zur Strahlentherapie des Krebses und zur Entwicklung des Strahlenschutzes, während die physikalische Strahlenwirkung für die medizinischen Belange in der Röntgendiagnostik angewendet wird. In der Geschichte der Strahlenbiologie zeichnen sich verschiedene Phasen ab, so die Phase I in der empirischen und experimentellen Sammlung von Fakten, die Phase II in der Entwicklung von Theorien, die Phase III in der Entdeckung der Abhängigkeit des strahlenbiologischen Effekts von verschiedenen Faktoren, wie Milieu, Qualität der Strahlen, Repair, während sich die heutige Strahlenbiologie zusehends mit der Deutung strahlenbiologischer Ereignisse durch biomolekulare Phänomene beschäftigt. Neben den biomedizinischen Errungenschaften schuf die Strahlenbiologie wichtige Einblicke in biologische Vorgänge, die prinzipielle Aussagen gestatteten.
