Zusammenfassung

Im Jahre 1861 präsentierte Prosper Menière anläßlich eines Vortrages vor der Académie impériale de médicine in Paris seine klinischen und pathologischen Beobachtungen zu einer Erkrankung, die er in seiner Eigenschaft als Direktor des königlichen Instituts der Taubstummen immer wieder beobachtet hatte. In einer im gleichen Jahr erschienenen Veröffentlichung in der Gazette médicale de Paris schilderte er ausführlich typische klinische Verläufe der bald nach ihm benannten Erkrankung: Die Betroffenen litten unter regelmäßig wiederkehrenden Schwindelanfällen, die von Tinnitus, einem Hörverlust sowie Übelkeit und Erbrechen begleitet waren.
