Zusammenfassung
Das Problem der Auskühlung während einer Anästhesie ist schon seit geraumer Zeit bekannt und veranlaßte Pickering 1958 zu der Äußerung: „The most effective means of cooling a man is to give him an anaesthetic.“ Dieser Aspekt der Anästhesie ist sicher nicht jedem Anästhesisten in der Ausübung seiner Tätigkeit bewußt. Die Übernahme der Verantwortung für die Regulation der vitalen Funktionen wie Atmung und Kreislauf erscheint selbstverständlich, der Verlust der Thermoregulation mit seinen Folgen dagegen wird größtenteils als unvermeidbare Nebenwirkung der Anästhesie in Kauf genommen. Ein Grund für diese „Verantwortungslosigkeit“ des Anästhesisten mag darin liegen, daß er einen Abfall der Körpertemperatur physiologisch und medizinisch nicht für relevant hält oder die Inzidenz einer perioperativen Hypothermie unterschätzt. Ein zusätzlicher Grund mag auch ein Mangel an effektiven therapeutischen Mitteln gegen Wärme Verluste sein. Bislang wurden mit relativ hohem Aufwand verschiedene wenig effektive Methoden zur Protektion gegen Wärmeverluste kombiniert.
