Abstract
During maturation of a normal B lymphocyte, selection and recombination of a particular VH gene with other genetic elements occurs, giving rise to a functional VH-D-JH unit. Selection is from among the six known VH families, which together comprise 100–200 genes (Berman et al, 1988; Schroeder et al, 1989), and the resulting recombinations in the B-cell population encode the functional repertoire. Since this repertoire can include autoantibodies, there has been considerable interest in the nature of the VH genes selected to encode these potentially pathological molecules.
