Zusammenfassung

Die Palliativmedizin, in Großbritannien seit 1987 ein eigenständiges Fachgebiet, entwickelte sich aus dem Bereich, der bis dahin als „terminal care“ (Betreuung von Sterbenden) bekannt war. Traditionell war diese auf die letzten Tage des Lebens beschränkt, wenn es schon zu spät war für Bestrahlung, Chemotheraphie, chirurgische Eingriffe oder irgendeine realistische Hoffnung auf eine auch nur geringfügige Rehabilitation.
