Zusammenfassung
Glukokortikoide sind ein unverzichtbarer Bestandteil der Therapie vieler chronischer immunologischer Erkrankungen, die sich bei stark zunehmender Inzidenz häufig durch eine frühe Manifestation bereits zwischen dem 30. und 50. Lebensjahr auszeichnen. Beispiele sind die Polyarthritis, das Asthma bronchiale sowie allergische und dermatologische Erkrankungen. Eine wachsende Bedeutung erlangt die Glukokortikoidtherapie in der Transplantationschirurgie zur Verhinderung von Organabstoßungs- und „graft-versus-host“-Reaktionen.
