Adsorption of Carbon Monoxide on Catalyst Surfaces: Oxides, Sulfides and Zeolites

Part of the Springer Series in Surface Sciences book series (SSSUR, volume 33)

Examples are discussed for the application of low-temperature FT infrared transmission absorption spectroscopy of adsorbed CO for the characterization of adsorption sites on catalysts such as binary oxides, supported oxides and sulfides, and zeolites. The nature of cation sites, their oxidation state and their coordination environment can be analyzed. The H-bonding characteristics, particularly the O-H stretching frequency shifts induced by CO adsorption on surface hydroxyl groups permits a relative acidity scale of these groups to be established.
