Throughout the 1980’s, the Swiss insurance market continued to be heavily regulated on the basis of the Federal law on the supervision of insurance (Versicherungsaufsichtsgesetz). The prime objective of the law, written very much in the spirit of German insurance legislation, is to secure the payment of claims to the insured by avoiding bankruptcy of the insurance company.
