Abstract
The mucosal surfaces constitute large areas in direct contact with the environment and are therefore especially vulnerable to infections. Both specific and nonspecific (e.g., lactoferrin, lysozyme, and other enzymes) host defense mechanisms are involved in the protection of the mucosal surfaces against infection with potentially pathogenic microorganisms. Antibodies produced locally by cells of the mucosal immune system are an important component of immune defense at these sites.
