Abstract

Lobar collapse of the lungs as a complication of abdominal surgery was described as early as 1910 [1]. Impaired pulmonary gas exchange occurring during general anesthesia was discovered much later, but its etiology has been investigated very extensively. Even today atelectases with arterial hypoxemia remain a major cause of postoperative morbidity.
