I have worked, in the course of time, on sufficiently many books so that I should have realized that the Introduction is the part of the book which one writes last. If there will be any merit in my Introductory Talk today, this will be due mainly to the help which I received from the committee which organized this symposium and from the participants who submitted papers — papers short enough so that I could read them. Incidentally, their rather large number indicates the magnitude of the interest in our subject, and even a quick perusal of the papers submitted shows the variety of the problems tackled.
