Abstract
Resistance of myeloid leukemic blasts to cytosine arabinoside probably is one of the predominant causes of failure to induction chemotherapy in acute myeloid leukemia. Haematopoietic growth factors might be able to increase the cytotoxicity of cycle-specific drugs such as ara-C for myeloid leukemic precursors. Several in vitro studies have been published and clinical trials are under way, including one at this center [1,2]. We investigated the sensitivity of AML blasts to cytosine arabinoside after pretreatment with rhGM-CSF and rhIL-3 in vitro. Samples of patients primed with GM-CSF in vivo were also analysed.
