Abstract
The intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) belongs to the immunoglobulin supergene family and is found to be expressed on a variety of hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells [1]. ICAM-1 is a ljgand for the LFA-1 adhesion receptor mediating LFA-1 dependent cell-cell interactions important for lymphocyte trafficking into inflammatory sites [2]. The expression of ICAM-1 can be modulated by inflammatory cytokines [3]. Precursor B-cell development involves a stroma-cell dependent phase in an early stage of pre B-ALL proliferation [4, 5]. During this early stage of development adhesion molecules like ICAM-1, LFA-1 VCAM-1 and VLA-4 might therefore play an essential role for the regulation and development ofleukemic progenitor cells [6]. We therefore investigated the expression and regulation of ICAM-1 by different cytokines which might play a role for the stroma dependent phase of precursor B-cell development.
