Das IEEE Standard Glossary of Terminology definiert SOFTWARE-ENGINEERING als “The application of a systematic, disciplined, quantifiable approach to the development, operation, and maintenance of software; that is, the application of engineering to software“ [vgl. IEEE Std. 610.12–1990, S. 67]. Das primäre Ziel ist es, die Qualität der Softwareprodukte und die Produktivität der Entwickler zu erhöhen.
