Regulation of Adhesion and Adhesion Molecules in Endothelium by Transforming Growth Factor-β

Part of the book series: Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology ((CT MICROBIOLOGY,volume 184))

Abstract

The maintenance of leukocytes in circulation during the normal state and their adhesion to endothelium and subsequent emigration from the bloodstream into sites of inflammation are tightly regulated phenomena. At least part of the control lies in the regulation of cell adhesion molecules on the surface of both the leukocytes and the endothelial cells (ECs). The importance of the adhesion molecules and their regulation is demonstrated in diseases such as atherogenesis, in which the endothelium is abnormally adhesive (Endemann etal. 1987; Territo etal. 1989) and in leukocyte adhesion deficiency (LAD), in which a lack of expression of adhesion molecules on the neutrophil results in an impaired immune response (Anderson and Springer 1987). This review will center upon the regulation of adhesion molecules on the endothelium.
