Abstract
The family of protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) includes a striking moltitude and diversity of members, all apparently committed with a single post-translational modification quantitatively almost negligible. PTPs should be therefore endowed with a marked substrate specificity. Despite such a theoretical expectation, very little is known about the factors determining the substrate and site recognition by PTPs.
