Abstract
In 1986 Langenberg and colleagues [5] showed that chromosomal DNA restriction endonuclease digest analysis provided a sensitive between isolates of Helicobacter pylori. Since then such data heve been used increasingly to characterize clinical isolates of H. pylori in treatment and epidemiological studies (for reviews see [3,9]). The total DNA patterns are generally complex and difficult to apply to large numbers of strains, but in 1990 Morgan and Owen [6] demonstrated that simpler fingerprints highlighting specific DNA sequences, namely ribosomal (r)RNA genes, within total digests. Subsequent studies provided further evidence that rRNA gene probe patterns (ribopatterns) are a simple but highly discriminatory electrophoretic fingerprint for H. pylori [9–12, 16]. The aim of the present report is to describe some recent developments and applications of ribopatterns to typing H. pylori.
